The southern realms of Germany offer a plethora of such opportunities for last minute travel plans and such is the abundance of beauty in these alpine landscapes that they hardly ever let you down. I find so much satisfaction getting off a small regional train at the station of some small town and being greeted with towering mountains right across the horizon, capped with fresh snow from the night before.
