The city is renowned for two of India’s most beloved sites. Of course, the number one landmark in Agra is the beautiful Taj Mahal. This brilliant yet massive white marble complex was built between 1631 and 1648 as a symbol of love for the emperor’s favourite wife. It is a World Heritage site, and can be visited between the hours of 6:00 and 18:30 every day except Fridays. The fascinating Agra Fort is another major landmark in Agra. It was constructed between 1565 and 1571, and still stands among India’s most well-preserved historical attractions.
Several important gardens are in Agra. Located across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal are the Mehtab Bagh gardens, one of Agra’s most beautiful landmarks. The views at sunrise and sunset here are magical. Of course, taking in the views of the white marble mausoleum across the river is a must. 500 metres north of Chini Ka Rauza stands the gorgeous Ram Bagh gardens, which are the first of their kind built during the reign of Emperor Babar. Just 10kms from Agra is the garden of Soami Bagh. It has been under construction since 1904, and still awaits completion.Restaurants and Bars
With so many tourists flocking to Agra, it is not surprising that the city has an assortment of international restaurants. Nevertheless, while in the city, tourists should not miss sampling some local delights. Petha is a candy-like snack, and Dal moth is a savoury lentil dish with added spices. Vendors also sell plenty of cheap food, including pan-fried potato cakes known as aloo tikki, and baked tandoor cottage cheese cubes called paneer tikka. Nightlife is very limited in Agra although alcohol is served at local hotels.Shopping
There are many different shops in Agra which sell everything from Taj Mahal replicas to gorgeous jewellery. Sadar Bazaar is the best place in the city to buy cheap merchandise. Bargaining is a must as shop-owners are known to begin with ridiculously high prices. Electronics are available at Shah Market, and clothing is best purchased at Subhash Bazar, close to Agra Fort Railway Station.
