Cley tower mill Viewed from the end of the 17th century deep water quay. Cley Mill, a 5-storey brick-built tower mill, was built around 1819; it had an octagonal domed cap with a petticoat, a gallery and an 8-bladed fan. The four sails were double shuttered and powered two pairs of French burr stones; there was a stage around the second floor. The plant can be found growing on walls, rocks and cliffs, their roots burying themselves into holes and crevices so as to give a firm anchorage. Originating from the Mediterranean, it was introduced as a garden plant during the 16th century but has since escaped and become naturalised. Present-day Cley is not in the same location as the medieval village of Cley used to be. This was located south of St Margaret's church > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/842723 and had a busy harbour, which was ruined by embanking in the 1640s by Sir Henry Calthorpe. A fire had already encouraged relocation in 1612. When Thomas Telford had been called in, in 1822, to advise on the problem of silting the Cley channel, his advice was ignored and the once busy port is now history. Many of the houses and cottages that line the narrow High Street (A149) through the village are built from flint and brick and date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

"The hotel was very clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay there again. The restaurant had a lot of dogs, which isn’t too good in a restaurant. The breakfast cup was very stained, so I had to get it swapped, but the food was very nice, with a lot of choice. Staff were very friendly, and we had a good laugh with them. "

"After a long day at the hospital we had decided not to travel to in the rain and dark so had booked this Hotel , so glad we did met by a lovely friendly young lady who welcomed us to the hotel , got our key and opened the door to a lovely large room on inspection it was clean and spacious checked bed sheets clean and felt just like home , mattress protector on which is a bonus not all hotels have these, the bathroom was fabulous you could eat off the floor the shower was a good size , the only let down it was cold on entry phoned reception was told comes on at 6pm ,once it did it was warm would have liked it on during the night has we had got very cold after a long day and we couldn't get warm in bed , going down to breakfasy met by welcoming staff who gave us awindow table and the breakfast was superb, eggs done choices very good bread was really lovely when toasted , after a traumatic day it was so nice to stay at a lovely friendly Hotel will recommend to friends and family especially a son who has just got into Golf ."
