Fascinating historical building, wonderful view of harbour from top floor restaurant, very helpful staff. But grubby throughout, walls, doors and furnishings particularly so. Food in restaurant uninspiring and overpriced. Second bedside cabinet and light missing in deluxe double room, only provided when I made a fuss at Reception, showing the photo of room as advertised (much better appointed!). Waited until 2.30. p.m. for room to be cleaned next day. Over time, became reconciled (resigned?) to the situation, and look back with some fondness, but only because of the personal charm of some staff members and the hotel’s undeniable character.

It's in the name: a grand, old, lovely establishment... Pleasant, friendly staff... Just the one Lankan restaurant in da hood: Pillawoos, with the standard fare of short eats, biriyani and so on. Very much a man scene... I could hear clearly midnight yapping from the next room, so the old walls must be thin which is surprising. One thing that bugged me was the Xmas jingles being played in the lobby and lift... Why not some Lankan mini-bus music?

lovely staff and a tip top location in the Fort... walls were thin and could hear midnight yappy neighbours... the Xmas carols bugged me in the lobby and lift... (why not Lankan music?)

The property has an old world charm. The rooms are large and spacious. There is no pool even though it is advertised as having a pool. It is tired but clean. It has character.

Mouldy shower walls, no hot water, the whole place needs a clean and renovation. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was good, but it was way over priced for what you get

Lovely hotel

Character and location are unbeatable
Have stayed here on many occasions. While the building is old and requires significant repairs (I understand that the property has been on the market for quite some time but nobody is willing to invest) I still like this centrally located hotel with four poster beds and high vaulted ceilings. The restaurant location overlooking the port is stunning. Given recent events in Sri Lanka and the dearth of tourists, the usually ample buffet breakfast has been replaced by a a la carte menu which is a pity. Otherwise, comfortable beds,good air conditioning and hot water. And of course a well trained and very amicable staff. Very good quality for money ratio.

Interesting for one night
Certainly an interesting experience, the hotel is such a unique building with so much history, which made the stay worthwhile. It’s “The Shining” meets “Grand Budapest Hotel” all in one, but with an expensive breakfast buffet (though it’s extensive and all you can eat so you can get your money’s worth). The rooms however are dated and seem dingy, not definitely freshly dirty, but appear that way as they’re unchanged since what looks like the 1970s judging by the bathrooms. Interesting for one night, go with an open mind.

Great old style hotel with real charm. Big clean room although bathroom needs attention. Courteous staff and value for money. As one customer noted, “go there before it gets the luxury makeover and becomes unaffordable.”
