Shamian Island, connected to the mainland by a bridge, is an oasis of calm. “Sand Surface Island’s” history dates back to colonial days, and the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1892, is the main sight. The U.S. consulate is on the opposite side of the island. For something different, visit Qingping Market, north of Shamian Island.
