We got upgraded to a suite on arrival. The hotel rooms are a little dated but they are really clean and the hotel location is just the best ever. The hotel is going to be renovated in 2015 and this will only further improve it. The staff are super friendly
I think as the other prior patrons have mentioned (see reviews in Trip Advisor/Yelp), there was street noise as our room faced the Ellis street- cable cars, trucks loading/unloading, some couple upstairs was 'at it' and we could hear the bed creaking pretty loudly but other than that the facilities, price point, etc. was just apt for the convenience of downtown. Although to be completely transparent- we'd read the reviews about the street noise, etc. and were offered an interior room which would have been quieter according to the staff member- but it was for an additional cost and we only wanted the room for a night, so we chose to take the street view room. My wife loved the street view and we were tired so the noise did not bother us after some time until we were woken up by this wonderful couple upstairs. :)
TIP: You can park for half the money in the public parking just next door versus their parking of $45/$50 (for oversize cars). I parked in the public parking for the day we came in and almost 3/4th of the next day and paid $34.
Very nice hotel. Rooms were nice and clean. Great location in the city. If your attending the club next door show them your room key for a discount and move to the front of line. My only problem is was the valet parking. My car came back with a really bad dent. They are not liable for your cars condition. Overall nice Hotel and staff.
The Mark Twain Hotel never pretends to be other than it is. It is a hotel built long before Big Macs and Starbucks. The windows open (no air conditioning) and you get a nice breeze. Newly updated (paint, carpet, etc.) the rooms are scrupulously clean! If you want a little more space, choose one of the larger rooms. Yes, there is street noise in some of the rooms, but you are in a city, after all.
The staff was helpful and breakfast items were plentiful (I grabbed a coffee, banana, and yogurt). Food in the immediate neighborhood was good. There is a cafe next door that had a line down the street during the breakfast rush (got breakfast later, around 11:30, and it was quick, and excellent.
There is a taxi stand across the street, and transit is close. I didn't rent a car as it is expensive to house them, and you don't really need one in the city (parking in S.F. can be a challenge.)
Convenient close to Union Square and Market Street. Excellent service and hotel staff and clean comfortable rooms. Budget for $50 valet parking per day, but hotel value made up for it Will stay again my next trip to San Fran.
