Get close to natural wonders in Lapland’s serene center, adorned with ancient forests, pristine snowfields and sparkling gemstones.

Head for the top of the world to hike through snowy wilderness and find precious gemstones in Luosto, the heart of mysterious Lapland. Experience an arctic landscape of folklore, snowshoeing through the white powder or speeding on sleds pulled by reindeer.

Explore the vast Pyhä-Luosto National Park, which connects the two tiny villages of Pyhä and Luosto via hiking and skiing trails. Wander through old-growth pine forest of trees that have been standing for centuries. Find remnants of important sacred sites of the indigenous Sámi people.

Hike or travel by miniature Pendolino snow train to the still active Amethyst Mine atop the Lampivaara hill. Its location provides breathtaking views over the unique Luosto landscape. Find shimmering purple stones that have been hiding underground and dig out your own special gem.

The Luosto Slopes skifields are compact and offer seven runs and off-piste areas popular with snowboarders. Alternatively, go roaming on safari with a snowmobile or ride in a sled pulled by furry huskies. See some of the fascinating animals of the cold-weather terrain at the Arctic Husky Farm. Here bouncing furry dogs will ferry you around on the snow.

Visit the nearby Kopara Reindeer Park for encounters with majestic reindeer. In Luosto, try snow fishing through the ice. In the warmer months, explore the green hills and forests on a mountain bike.

Take a break from holiday fun for quiet reflection at Luosto’s Chapel of the Northern Lights. Relax and rejuvenate at the Amethyst Spa, which features both Finnish and Turkish saunas. While Luosto is somewhat removed from main viewing areas for the aurora borealis, or northern lights, it is possible to glimpse this magical phenomenon if you’re visiting at the right time.

Travel to Luosto by small plane or train. During winter, take the Luosto SkiBus to the village. Stay in a cosy log cabin or a contemporary hotel. Investigate the nearby city of Rovaniemi, the “official town” of Santa Claus.
