Visitors are drawn to SanktWolfgang im Salzkammergut for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that the town itself is almost impossibly picturesque. Walk along the waterfront and see old-fashioned Austrian buildings reflected in the clean waters of Lake Wolfgangsee. Beyond the town, explore the mountains, lakes and forests that make the Salzkammergut area a favourite destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The town is named after the saint who is said to have hidden from persecution in this mountainous area more than 1,000 years ago. Find signs of this rich religious history scattered all through the town today as you explore.
Start your walk around charming St. Wolfgang in the historic Marktplatz. This beautiful square is surrounded by traditional Austrian buildings with ornate detailing. Don’t miss the wonderful Pilgrimage Church, which stands nearby. Admire the charming white exterior of this lovely church, the most notable landmark in the town, which towers high above the roofs of all the other buildings. Head inside to be overwhelmed by the Baroque intricacy of the interior, which features a fantastically detailed painted ceiling and ornate stonework. Wonder at the marvellous centerpiece of the church, the astonishingly complex Michael Pachar Altar, which dates from 1481.
Stop for coffee or browse for souvenirs at the many charming cafés and stores in the pedestrianized town centre. An unexpected tourist sight here is the Wolfgangsee Puppenmuseum, which looks at the history of dolls. Be sure to bring your kids to this unusual little place.
Drive to Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut from Salzburg Airport in less than an hour. Once there, make the most of the incredible natural surroundings so close by. Head out onto Lake Wolfgangsee in a boat or dive straight in for a swim on a warm summer day. Hike the many beautiful mountain trails that weave through the local countryside. Come in winter to take to the slopes on skis or on a snowboard when you visit Dachstein West, a magnificent ski area that is just over an hour from St. Wolfgang by car.
