The sea & beach after summer

Zeeland is a seaside town in the southwest of the Netherlands and a great destination for an active family holiday.

1953 was possibly one of the worst years in the history of Zeeland. More than 1,000 people died in the floods that engulfed the province. It was clear that a new defence system was needed to protect the region from the sea. This system is the impressive storm surge barrier Delta Works, which took over 57 years to build. Plan a day to drive around the area and visit the works. The Watersnoodmuseum (flood museum) in Ouwerkerk is also worth spending time at. The museum has permanent exhibitions on the flood.

Thanks to the Delta Works, the Dutch no longer have to worry about the sea and can enjoy the sun and the sandy beaches. Walk on the beach, look for marine life and stop to build sandcastles with the kids. In Vlissingen, you can combine a trip to the beach with a stroll along the beautiful promenade. It's also a great place to enjoy a gorgeous sunset.

Zeeland has a number of lovely towns and villages, but there's one town that you shouldn't miss: Middelburg. This picturesque town has a number of monuments, the most striking of which is by far Lange Jan. This abbey in the centre of town has a 91-m high tower and is a great landmark. If you’re prepared to climb the 207 steps to the top you’ll be rewarded with an awesome view of the area.

While in Middleburg, you can also take the kids to Mini Mundi, a smallish family park with indoor and outdoor playgrounds. There are also a couple of attractions such as a roller coaster and a 'flying' ship. Mini Mundi is a good alternative to the beach and a good way for the kids to get rid of their energy.
