Hello Hilda, many thanks for your positive review and the lovely comments you left in the visitors'book. We look forward to hosting you and your family again in the future, and hopefully the weather will be better!
Setting and hospitality was lovely, BUT mice running on counter in kitchen and through the ceiling during night kept us up, a lot of flies dive bombed me when trying to sleep, dead flies and mouse droppings to deal with. ALSO the steep stairs with no handrail or fall protection was a big concern and the large drop into the attic bedroom needs a step. Dining was closed as chef was away so don't count on food but kitchen setup was good. Had a nice woodstove for a fire to take the chill off and comfy sitting area.

We are sorry your experience of NZ rural life was not what you expected. Unfortunately you stayed for anight just at the end of harvest in the surrounding paddocks. As you realised, we are in the so-called middle of nowhere, with just fields and fields of grains and grass. To be honest in the 21 years I have lived here, this is the first time a field mouse has entered the place. It was a very hot day, windows and doors open, it can happen- just like flies arriving unexpectedly at this time of year. It is rural life. Of course now there is not a fly in sight. You booked a self-catering house, normally chosen because you want your independence with cooking etc.Dining is always available to guests staying in the self-catering houses if pre booked as the lodge(where you did not stay) is available by reservation only. Had you asked for that when you made the booking the day before, dinner would have been available. The lodge dining room was closed because there were no booking for dinner that night, so no chef. We are pleased however that you found the setting and hospitality great- I enjoyed chatting to you and setting you up in the non-hosted house you booked, and that sitting room and fire were to your liking.
A real find. Wonderful from start to finish. The three course dinner is a must! Breakfast set us up for the whole day. Lovely couple very friendly.

Ok
We stayed in the house. The upstairs hall smells like cat urine. When we arrived the woman seemed like we were a bother. The gentleman was very nice and helpful in the morning.

Dear guest
there is no reference to your reservation here nor your name so it is impossible for us to comment specifically.
I am sorry that you felt that you did not feel welcomed by "the woman" who welcomed you. We always greet out guests at the door on arrival, offer to help with bags if necessary, we show them to their room, offer tea or coffee, ask if dinner is required, allow guest to settle in and ask if anything else is needed and engage in conversation, so I am finding your comment somewhat surprising.I am pleased though that you thought "the man'" was very nice.
As for the smell, I am afraid we cannot smell it at all, have never had any guest comment on it, nor in the past, nor recently nor this week. However, we shall investigate the situation.
I hope you enjoyed your stay none-the-less, that the you liked the style of the lodge, the gardens, that the beds were comfortable and that breakfast was to your satisfaction.
Kind Regards
Simonetta, the owner.
We arrived at this lovely country house and were warmly welcomed by Simonetta. We were told we were the only ones staying that night and we basically had the run of the house. Our room had a lovely verandah which overlooked the gardens. Dinner was arranged for 7pm and was delicious. Pumpkin and Scallop soup, Rack of Lamb and Peaches with Ammaretti. It was a very cold night and we were very glad of the lovely fire in both the dining room and the lounge. We retired to our room fairly early as we had a busy next day. The bed was extremely comfortable and warm. Breakfast was great too. After returning home, I realised I had left my pillow and contacted Simonetta who very kindly organised to post it to me. Much appreciated.

Fabulous hospitality. Verandahs with wicker chairs. Comfy beds. Antique furniture.
