"This is a beautiful old hotel property. It has great bones and the rooms have been updated and modernized nicely. That said, there are some very quirky aspects to the property. Firstly, there is no reception - just an automated machine that provides a key card. This means that there is no one to ask about parking, amenities etc. The second thing is that no one speaks English at all. The cleaning staff was very sweet but could not speak a word. "Arrived early morning after 21 hour journey by bus. Reception staff managed to organise an earlier check in which was very appreciated. Enjoyed our stay and relaxing surroundings. Preferred quieter Merseburg to Leipzig."

"Great location and stunning town. The hotel inside is clean but already looks dated. Swimming pool was sadly out of action during my stay. The staff weren’t overly enthusiastic but helped where they could. Don’t expect amazing customer service. Rooms are very warm in hot weather as there is no air con, just a fan provided in the room. The Mattress was worn with a dip in the middle and the room was spacious but very basic and worn. Can’t complain for the price but don’t expect high end."

We had to use Google Translate for all interactions including ordering breakfast, asking for towels, etc. Finally, the public spaces are very austere. This seems out of place with the historic hotel. For example, there are just IKEA tables and chairs in the eating area but then there is a large open foyer on the second floor with a grand piano. But there are no chairs or couches in that room. It seems with a bit of TLC this could be a great boutique hotel and cool place to hang out. This is especially true when you consider the location right across the street from the historical theatre where we attended the International Ballet Festival."

"The property sends the checkin info via a link to Expedia message box. However Expedia app doesn’t allow links apparently so you can not follow the link to the checkin site. Fortunately I have my laptop so could login to the Expedia website and follow the link. If I didn’t have the laptop it would have been very hard to do the checkin. There is nobody at the property to help, no reception or front desk or anybody. It is all based on the code that is supposed to be sent you after finishing a lengthy check in process that requires uploading documents and taking photos. It would have been much easier to have the link sent as text with the explicit url to copy and paste from Expedia messages in the app. "
