Built in 1730 on the ruins of a castle that was home to Grace O’Malley, the famous 16th century Pirate Queen of Connaught, Westport House is one of County Mayo’s most popular tourist attractions.
Over five million people have enjoyed the charming mansion and the Pirate Adventure Park that also stands in the grounds. Older visitors will marvel at a house full of original contents displayed in stunning period-styled rooms while youngsters will love the swinging boat, flume ride and host of other activities in the pirate-themed play area.
Up until July 2014 the house was the ancestral seat of the Marquess of Sligo. After his death the house passed to his five daughters, who are direct descendants of Grace O’Malley.
First opened to the public in 1960, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful homes in Ireland. Set in parkland featuring lakes, terraces and beautifully landscaped gardens, visitors can enjoy fantastic views of Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, Clare Island and Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s so-called holy mountain.
Over 30 rooms are open to the public, each one complete with original antiques and works of art, and the story of the Browne family, dedicated owners of Westport House, is told in the self-guide or guided tours on offer.
The Pirate Adventure Park has all sorts of rides, swan-shaped pedalos, a bouncy castle, go-karts, pitch and putt golf, soft play area, miniature railway and a café bar. You can also hop on board the Westport Train for a 50-minute tour taking in the house, its grounds and the town’s quay.
