Western Australia’s capital, Perth, is a relaxed city perched upon picturesque Swan River. Enjoy boutique shopping in the city’s centre, bars and nightlife in Northbridge and historic architecture and museums in Subiaco. Not far from town is Cottesloe Beach, known for its great surf.

Fremantle is a portside city packed with art galleries, trendy cafés, performers and maritime museums. Cruise to Rottnest Island nature reserve. Walk or cycle near the ocean and watch for cute marsupial quokkas and resident birdlife.

North of Perth is the Coral Coast, best known for Ningaloo Reef just off Exmouth. Snorkel the reef or dive with manta rays and whale sharks. Meet a pod of friendly wild dolphins at Monkey Mia and hike through coastal parks filled with blooming wildflowers.

Farther inland are the gorges of Karijini National Park. Hike past incredible geology with flowing waterfalls and spectacular views. Look for dingos and echidnas, regularly seen in the park.

Relax on the white-sand beaches of Broome, a pearling port in the Kimberley region. Watch the moon rise over Cable Beach and visit historic Chinatown. Camp beneath the stars in Kununurra. Discover ancient indigenous rock art and wander amid sandstone domes known as the Bungle Bungles.

Go gold prospecting in Kalgoorlie. Outback pubs in former goldmining towns provide interesting atmosphere. Take a four-wheel-drive tour to see unearthly dry salt lakes around the Goldfields region.

Explore the natural karst cave systems along the Margaret River. Top off your day with a chardonnay at one of the Margaret River vineyards. Immerse yourself in settler history and the whaling era on the south coast in Albany’s museums or head to Esperance to unwind in secluded bays, beaches and scenic coves.
