Wageningen has some 38,000 inhabitants many of which study or work at Wageningen University. The city centre is buzzing with students so if you want some peace and quiet, the Veluwe is to the east, the Rhine and the Betuwe to the south, and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Gelderse Vallei to the west.
The town's prestigious university focuses on topics such as healthy food and the environment. During the yearly Food4U Festival in October everything in town is about food, although you can get delicious food all year round in Wageningen. Go to one of the many charming restaurants at the market square or treat yourself to a meal at the Michelin starred Restaurant O Mundo in Hotel de Wereld at 5 Mei Plein.
There are five war monuments on 5 Mei Plein of which the Nationaal Bevrijdingsmonument (National Liberation Monument) is the most conspicuous. The locals also call it 'Blote Jan'. The two farmhouses built at the beginning of the 18th century are also well worth looking at.
And don't forget to go into the Grote Kerk at the market square. This listed building has been rebuilt twice since it was demolished in the Second World War. One of its special features is the stained glass Remembrance Window which was unveiled by Queen Beatrix at the back of the church in 1987.
