Experience the local way of life among Viitasaari’s cultural attractions.

Located in Central Finland, there’s plenty of things to see and do while on holiday in Viitasaari with a number of fantastic attractions, including art galleries, historical sites and beautiful scenery. For fishing enthusiasts, Viitasaari also has one of the best rapids in Finland.

Viitasaari is easily accessible from different parts of Finland, as it sits on motorway 4, between Helsinki and Utsjoki. You can easily organise a low-cost summer holiday in Viitasaari by travelling by boat on Lake Keitele. The nearest airport is about 56 miles away in Jyväskylä.

Viitasaari is a great place for a town break, as it offers a wide range of cultural and historical attractions to explore. The town has several art galleries, such as the Tuulensuu Art Centre, and the privately owned Vuorela Manor organises regular art exhibitions during the summer months. Places of architectural interest in Viitasaari also include the 1898 Viitasaari Church, restored by Alvar Aalto in 1925, and the Byzantine-Karelian Orthodox Chapel of Christ’s Transfiguration.

The Kärnä Electric Power Plant Museum, on the Kärnänkoski rapids, is a wonderful place if you want to learn more about hydroelectric power. The nearby Forestry Museum is ideal for those interested in the town’s history. After the museum, you can visit the nearby Savivuori Observation Tower to admire the surrounding scenery.

Apart from its galleries and museums, Viitasaari also has a wealth of attractions offering peace and tranquillity. For those who enjoy fishing, why not try and catch some trout in the popular fishing rapids of Huopanankoski? Or why not hike to Kymönkoski and see the naturally formed stairs known as Karoliina’s stairs, one of the marvels of Central Finland. The Koljatti Nature Trail leads through rugged rock terrain to a lean-to shelter and campfire site on the shores of Lake Kalliojärvi.

Viitasaari is on the Blue Highway, an international tourist route passing from Norway through Sweden and Finland to Russia. The town has everything you need for a great holiday. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and cultural offerings and try fishing in the area’s fish-rich rapids.
