Albert Einstein’s birthplace has the tallest church steeple in the world. Today the city is an economic centre, rich with history and traditions.

Ulm is located on the River Danube in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The former Free Imperial City is now home to a university and various industries. Internationally, it is best known for the Ulm Minster because of its 530-foot (161.5-metre) spire, which is the highest church spire in the world. Secondly, its world fame comes from being the birthplace of theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. Before you leave, make sure you get a photo of the Einstein Fountain, which was erected in the city as a memorial to the great scientist.

Not far from the Minster is Rathaus Ulm (Town Hall), illustrating early Renaissance architecture. Head inside and see a replica of the flying apparatus of Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger, the “Tailor of Ulm” on the staircase.

Learn about the region’s history and traditions at the various museums across the city. You will see an archaeological collection of exhibits from primeval to early history in the region at the Ulm Museum. For a different look at history, try the Museum of Bread Culture. There you will see more than 16,000 objects and pieces of art illustrating the history of bread making and its importance to human existence, culture and civilization.

Head to the University of Ulm to spend some time in its beautiful botanical garden, Botanischer Garten de Universitat Ulm. There are numerous tropical plants, a herbal garden and lily show gardens to see as you wander around.

The city’s Old Town is on the left bank of the River Danube and is full of pedestrian streets. When you have finished exploring the district, stay close to the river with a stroll along the Town Walls on the Danube, which is a popular walking trail for locals and visitors. The walls will take you past the Fishermen’s Quarter and Tanner’s Quarter, where you will see half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and charming footbridges. When you’re ready for a bite to eat, you will find plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from along the waterfront.

Public transportation options around the eight districts of Ulm include several bus lines and a tram line. There is a park-and-ride service from the highway as well as plenty of parking spaces downtown.
