Come to this enchanting village to enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Rhine River and snap photos of the castles decorating the Bingen Forest.
Trechtingshausen is known for its three impressive castles. The village is in the midst of glorious countryside in the Middle Rhine Valley, where vineyards adorn the verdant hills. Trek along the nature trails beside the river to enjoy the fresh air and serenity.
Capture photos of the rows of quaint houses overlooking the Rhine River. Visit the Clemenskapelle, a Romanesque red-and-white church with a black steeple. It dates back to the 13th century and has been renovated several times over the years.
Walk south along the river to reach the Burg Reichenstein, a 13th-century castle on the slopes of the Bingen Forest. Admire its neo-Gothic façade and see the range of ruins and restored parts. Climb to the tower for excellent views of the surrounding landscape.
A little farther south is the medieval Rheinstein Castle that stands on an emerald hilltop, offering an excellent vista of the Rhine River. Embark on a guided tour to learn about the rich history of the structure, initially built in the 14th century, before being reconstructed in the 1800s.
The third castle is Sooneck Castle, just north of the village’s central area. Enjoy the views of this 13th-century treasure, secluded in the misty, forested mountains. Take a tour of the grounds and enjoy snacks and refreshments at the castle café.
Attend one of the events that take place year-round in this region, such as the Rhein in Flammen on the first Saturday of July. It includes ship tours and fireworks displays at many of the castles in the district.
Trechtingshausen is in the Mainz-Bingen part of the Rhineland-Palatinate region of western Germany. Fly to Frankfurt Airport and drive west for less than 1 hour or take a train to the Trechtingshausen Railway Station, which is on the Mainz-Koblenz line. Visit nearby cities, such as Koblenz, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt.
