The Donkey Sanctuary

If you’re visiting the Republic of Ireland’s unspoilt southwest region and fancy adding an unexpected feelgood zip to your trip, it’s hard to beat The Donkey Sanctuary in the lush green hills of County Cork. Kids love the place, and they’re definitely not alone!

Situated way off the beaten track in the very best sense, there’s a serious benefit to navigating into the depths of the Irish countryside in order to visit, befriend and generally make a fuss of some 250 animals on the Donkey Sanctuary estate. For all these donkeys have been rescued from their former lives of misery, and were either mistreated, abandoned or overworked before the intervention of this worthy institution.

Run entirely as a charity, the Donkey Sanctuary has had an important part to play in the lives of almost 3,000 donkeys over the years. In Ireland, donkeys are still widely used to haul peat and heavy loads and, once their working lives are over, it is all too common for these loveable beasts of burden to be poorly treated as surplus to requirements.

When an animal comes into the care of the Donkey Sanctuary, it is guaranteed a peaceful and loving environment for the remainder of its life. In many cases, the love, companionship and gentle care offered will be the donkey’s first experience of kindness. Come and cuddle a donkey now!

The Donkey Sanctuary is situated 30 miles north of Cork and the same distance south of Limerick, off the N20 near the village of Liscarroll. It’s recommended that larger groups and anyone who would like a tour of the Sanctuary should get in touch in advance.
