The temple stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. The vimanam (temple tower) is 198 ft (60 m) high and is one of the tallest in the world. The Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) weighs around 80 tons.There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high at the entrance.[ The entire temple structure is made out of granite, the nearest sources of which are about 60 km to the west of temple. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.

Very calm and peaceful resort perfect getaway from the hustle bustle of the city. The staffs were amazing. Special kudos to Jainul, Sukumar, Paneerselvam and Santhosh for taking care throughout. Great place and highly recommend.

I along witgh my family stayed in Great Trail Resort from 8th to 10th! The property is a large one and rooms are spacious! The staff are helpful! My mother got sick and Mr Sridhar, Mr Parivallal & Mr Chandrakumar helped us in the matter! We thank the staff of Great Trail in resolving the issue! Calm and quiet place by the banks of Veenar River!!!

Hotel has a somewhat rundown look about it. The rooms are quite large and of reasonable quality. The choices offered at Buffet meals are ok but not outstanding. The quality of English spoken by staff is rather variable. The hotel is about 5 km from central Tanjore and the sights. There is nothing of interest close to the hotel. The swimming pool is nice. The complementary tea and snacks at 5 pm are nothing special. In my view, this hotel is pleasant enough but somewhat over priced.

I picked this property because of the GRT name and it was on the river. Its away from the hustle and bustle of the city and a narrow road takes you to the property. Check in was excellent, staff was courteous and its lush vegetation that surrounds the property. Peacocks and all sorts of birds are in the property. Its in the bank of river Vennar. No water in the river but lots of starks and peacocks running around . Food for lunch or dinner is where it needs some more options for vegetarians. Samosas for appetizers had cheese in it . Think they need to stick to traditional samosas. Breakfast was good and the smily chef made excellent pooris, dosas and vadas. Staff was very courteous and helpful. Overall an excellent choice for people that prefer a quiet tranquil escape and i will come back and stay at this property again

Has seen better days but reasonably comfortable.

Hotel was more run down than I expected, though I assumed it’s an older hotel. They could do so much with this location to improve experience. Room was fine and huge bed. Mattress not the softest. Great anur conditioning. Also limited hot water when I arrived at night. Had hoped to have a bath after long travels. As others have commented there is a very loud dawn chorus early morning. Might not be ideal for light sleepers. I used ear plugs. Upside of location is chance to see peacocks and feel close to nature after hectic cities. Also nice to walk in countryside if you take right hand exit at hotel entrance. But no autos around so you need to ask reception to book auto. 350 rupees to temple which was reasonable as quite a long drive. Ola does not work here. Breakfast was a bit disappointing compared to other GRT hotels I have stayed in. But nice location on verandah by river. It has a lot of water now as other posts said it’s dry. Pool also nice with some loungers. A great hotel to chill out but not five star reviews and not much to do in vicinity apart from enjoying nature. But make sure to visit the temple!

Thank you to the amazing staff for their hospitality and their service with smiles. We were a family of seven with senior citizens and they accommodated our needs beautifully. Go between Aug and Feb to see the river in full flow.
