Learn more about Tamanrasset

Hire a local guide to explore the ancient rock art of Tassili n'Ajjer National Park, accessible from this Saharan gateway city. Bargain for traditional Tuareg crafts at the central market before joining a 4x4 tour into the dramatic red dunes surrounding Assekrem.

April 2011

Ilaman, Ahaggar mountains, Sahara

Ahaggar or Hoggar mountains are the rockiest and highest part of Sahara desert some 1.500 km down from Algeria coast. It is mostly highland plateau with altitude of 2.000 metres made of volcanic material ca. 2 million years old. In some places there are the remaining spikes of volcanic cones rising like the one called Ilaman with its appealing peak 2.760 m high. Water and wind eroded the surface to strangely beautiful stones of all sizes, shapes and colour shades.
The structure in front is a simple sanctuary of local Touareg people. The name Touareg means "forgotten by God" and they were titled so by the more orthodox muslims in the past. They practice the islam faith but in their way... No fancy mosques in the desert, just small structures made of stone and wood..
