The trails of three of the country's tourist associations meet here, perfect for exploring the beautiful scenery.

A visit to Sunndalsøra will be a guaranteed success for those with an interest in hiking. Why not visit Dovrefjell – Sunndalsfjella National Park? The area also has a rich cultural life with festivals and sporting events. Sunndalsøra is also home to Hydro Aluminium, which is one of the largest employers in the area.

Sunndalsøra is situated at the mouth of the Rivers Driva and Litldalselva in the municipality of Sunndal in Møre og Romsdal. It has a great climate, and agriculture has been practised here since the Bronze Age. However, many of the old settlements were destroyed by landslides and floods. Parts of the area’s oldest building, Flåstuo, date back to the 1400s.

Hydropower has played a key role for industry in Norway, and if you pay a visit to Visningsverk Aura you can go on a tour of the power station itself. Visit Åmotan, where five rivers converge into an extreme natural phenomenon, often referred to as the Niagara of the Nordic region. A visit to Leikvin Cultural Heritage Park will allow you to learn more about cultural history over the last 3,000 years.

A weekend trip to Sunndalsøra in June, during the Sunndal Culture Festival, will mean that you get to enjoy the famous musical, Lady Arbuthnott, which is staged every year. Why not follow in the footsteps of numerous Norwegians who have passed over the mountains between Sunndal and Eikedal for thousands of years? The magnificent Aursjøvegen road is as impressive today as it was several hundred years ago.

The closest airports are in Molde and Ålesund. It takes around an hour and a half hour to drive from Molde and just over three from Ålesund. There are few local buses around Sunndalsøra and it might be a good idea to arrange a hire car for your holiday in Sunndalsøra.

An excursion to Sunndalsøra offers many exciting outdoor activities. You can choose between short, easy trails and longer hikes far into the mountains. There are also great salmon fishing rivers, beautiful mountain lakes and ample opportunities for sea fishing.
