Tsitsikamma National Park featuring cuddly or friendly animals
Marvel at the stunning waterfalls and gorges along this powerful river that runs through a conservation area with scenic trails.

Storms River is a vast river that flows through the picturesque Garden Route in the Tsitsikamma National Park. The famous Otter Trail begins at the mouth of the river and takes around 5 days to complete. Marvel at the dramatic coastal scenery that includes dense forests of fynbos heathland and jagged cliffs lapped by powerful waves.

Capture photos of the river, which runs through a nature reserve with ice pools, gorges and cascades. Reach the river mouth and scan the ocean with the hope of spotting whales and dolphins. Dine at the restaurant and enjoy the view of the water. Among the highlights by the river mouth is the narrow suspension bridge with a spectacular vista for pedestrians.

By the hamlet of Thornham is the impressive Storms River Bridge, with its elegant arch that stretches across a vast, forested gorge. Try thrilling activities, such as ziplining on a canopy tour or canoeing down river.

Admire the huge outeniqua yellowwood trees that tower over the river and its surroundings. Some of these majestic giants are more than 1,000 years old and stand beside the stinkwood trees, so-called for their unpleasant odor.

Embark on the 28-mile (45-kilometer) Otter Trail to encounter a range of birds, including the rednecked spurfowl. Other wildlife here includes aardvarks, monkeys, porcupines and many other exotic animals.

Stay the night at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp and appreciate the sound of rushing water. Gaze up at the stars in the clear night’s sky in this rural area far from the buzz of city life. Many backpacker lodges and spa boutiques decorate this pleasant landscape.

To explore the national park, pay a daily conservation fee per person, which is half price for children.

Find Storms River in the Tsitsikamma National Park on the Eastern Cape. It is about 124 miles (200 kilometers) east of Mossel Bay in central southern South Africa. Visit nearby landmarks such as the Formosa Nature Reserve and Nature’s Valley.

8/10 Very Good! (4 reviews)
"Nice facility, although it may s quite old, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. There is a wood stove which they provided wood for and it warmed the place up quite nicely. The kitchen could be better stocked if you were to stay there for a few days but it has the basics. I would stay again if in the area."
