Possible scam
This was a bit of a scam. I noticed a comment before about a client being asked to change hotels because of roadworks at the location but assumed that was a special circumstance. The day before we got a phone call from the landlord telling us the same story - that we would not be able to sleep because of the construction noise (we reserved the room for a Saturday night). But he assured us he had a better location in the centre. As we were there for a big event, we had no choice. The "better" apartment was in a derelict building that was for sale with the note: to be renovated. Last update was in the 1970s with electricals sticking out of the wall, humidity smell in the bathroom, rotting wooden window frames and these portable kerosene heaters that we could not use because of the gas fumes (-4°C at night). The kind man told us that the cleaning lady has cancer but assured us the room was clean. It was not (chips on the floor, dust along the window ledge and cobwebs over the lights...) The landlord noted that the value of the place was far less than what we rented and told us to cancel the other reservation for a refund (not in the Hotels.com conditions for the evening of the rental) and pay him the lower amount in cash. We weren't going to play that game. Everything about this place was so dodgy that it became a joke we could laugh about. And by the way, about the construction works by our original rental? Leaving town by the site, the street was fine.
