We took the Trans-Siberian train from Moscow to St Petersburg, 8 hours ride in 3rd class (platzkart) and we didn't regret it at all. We slept very well, the provodnitsa was really kind, but don't expect to find a lot of English speakers there. Body language does wonders :). This is the cup they use for serving tea, i especially liked the metal cup holder, which was beautifully crafted. You can also buy one from the train, I think it was around 800 RUB. And it seemed only appropriate to read the Trans-Siberian Handbook on the way. Dreaming of doing the whole thing from Moscow to Vladivostok one day!
