Sliema Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Sliema which includes swimming and rocky coastline as well as a large group of people
Discover a picturesque seafront, historic landmarks, upscale shopping zones and lively nightlife districts while visiting one of Malta’s most chic coastal resorts.

Sliema is a stylish seaside town on a peninsula on Malta’s northeastern coastline. Visit this area to enjoy its elegant waterfront, rocky beaches, nightlife and superb retail experiences. The scene of a violent battle during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, Sliema then developed as a humble fishing village. The town rose to prominence in the 19th century, when British colonists shaped the architectural landscape and it became a summer retreat of affluent Maltese.

Experience the town’s style while walking along Sliema Promenade, which parallels the waterfront and connects to the villages of St. Julian’s and Gzira. Find benches, cafés, children’s playgrounds, lavish apartment blocks and several Victorian-era buildings. Admire ancient watchtowers, including the 17th-century St. Julian’s Tower and Gothic-style Il-Fortizza. Steps lead down from the promenade to rocky beaches. From here, jump into the warm Mediterranean water and swim at public lidos.

Visit religious landmarks at the heart of the town, including Stella Maris Church and the Holy Trinity Church. Enjoy uninterrupted views from Tigné Fort across to Valletta, Malta’s capital. Relax amid flower-filled lawns and fountains at Independence Garden.

Indulge in shopping along the town’s commercial streets and malls. Browse over 70 stores and attend fashion shows at the Point Shopping Mall. Shop at boutiques, upscale outlets and well-known chain stores on Bisazza Street and Triq Manwel Dimech. Explore the bars, cafés and restaurants lining Triq Ix-Xatt street along the bay.

See Sliema and Malta’s glorious coast on a boat tour. Cruise across Marsamxett Harbour to Valletta, home to attractions such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Sail out into the Mediterranean to see the Dingli Cliffs on the opposite side of the island.

Reach Sliema by flying to Malta International Airport and taking a shuttle bus or taxi. Walk around comfortably on the flat streets. Ride local buses or rent a scooter to St. George’s Bay beach and the Paceville nightlife neighborhood, both in St. Julian’s.

"We had a wonderful stay, would highly recommend! The staff was terrific! The hotel was in a great location. We also had a great view of the water from the 14th floor. The only thing I would say is I wish the bed was softer, but that’s probably more personal taste."

It was my second time in Malta, stayed both time in Sliema. I love it’s promenade, the ferry takes you to Valletta in 5. My issue is the constructions along the promenade and in general in Sliema. Those high story buildings destroy the charm of it.

Sliema has a lot to offer, shops, bars, restaurants. It is easy to get to Valletta from here and good bus service around the island. Locals friendly and mostly speak English.

Sliema isnt as old as Valetta just across the harbour but it has beauty in its sheer dedication to new build and innovative structures. It has good shopping and eating, a pretty waterfront all along Tower road and great bus communication
