Named for the French fortress that once occupied its peak, the forested Schlossberg is a favorite destination for locals wanting to escape the town center. With multiple walking tracks, shady Douglas firs and a beer garden at the summit that provides views across the Black Forest, it’s not difficult to see why. Those less inclined to hiking up hills will enjoy the scenic view from the Schlossbergbahn, a cable car that takes you from the base to summit.
Two main trails lead to the summit, each departing from a restaurant at the base of the hill. Your journey will see you move through shady forest on your way. Those looking for more serious hiking can use the Schlossberg trails as the beginning of a longer journey to neighboring villages. Hiking maps are available at the tourist information center located within the Old Town Hall. Once you reach the top, relax with a drink at the beer garden located on top of the hill.
Board the Schlossbergbahn for a different way down. The cable car connects the city center with the top of Schlossberg and operates daily until after dark. The cable car was built in 2008 and will transport you a distance of 860 feet (262 meters) back to the city.
Schlossberg can be visited daily and is free of charge. Those wanting to travel aboard the cable car will need to purchase tickets upon boarding. Reach the base of Schlossberg by foot or by train.
