Not the accommodation we booked…

On arrival at 13.00 we were told that we could not have our room key until 14.30. Fair enough although most hotels that we have stayed in have been flexible on this point. Asked if they had a room for luggage while we went for lunch. No but we could leave it in the lounge. We left it and decided to go out for lunch. when we returned at 14.30 we were given the key to our room which was on the second floor despite requesting a lower floor room. When we got to our room we were annoyed to see it was a double room and not the twin room we had booked. Returned to reception to complain that a double room was not what we had booked only to be told that there was nothing they could do about it. There would be a twin available on the following day. Showed them a copy of the booking which was clearly for a twin they said there is not one available today but will be tomorrow. They said that accommodation requested was not guaranteed I accept that a low floor room request may not be possible but a twin room booking is not a request. We went to look at the other room next day, agreed that we wanted to move and had once again to wait until 2.30 to get the key. This is a very nice little hotel, literally a stone’s throw to the beach (Sardineros, but also very close to Camellos and Magdalena). I was in room 103, so main building and my experience was more like a bed and breakfast as there’s quite a lot of people traffic (footfall) noise from the corridors. But I am not a light sleeper, so it didn’t bug me. The breakfast was nice - I like it that you can buy a coffee and/or a coffee and a snack and pay a fair price. Very nice touch to have beach towels available. My bedroom was small, but for 1 person it’s ok. It’s a double bed so I don’t know if they would put a couple in. Bathroom also quite small but great water pressure. The only quibble I had was staff didn’t speak a lot of English - fine for me as I get by, but I can see this could be problematic. Also they weren’t very knowledgeable of things like bus schedules (I don’t mean specifics, but one of the reception ladies told me no bus running to the station on Saturday at 7am (which wasn’t true). Little things like those matter. We stayed for 2 nights in early October. San Vicente de Barquera is a small seaport town with lots of bars and restaurants, and old castle and a couple of churches. The hotel was 5 minutes walk from the main area and was quiet. The rooms were smallish and looked a little tired but were clean and tidy. The hotel did not seem as friendly as some of the other hotels we stayed in during out 2 week touring holiday, but the staff on the whole, were helpful when necessary.…We stayed for 2 nights in early October.
