Sanctuary Madonna of the Splendor

Santuario della Madonna dello Splendore featuring interior views, heritage elements and a church or cathedral
Wander along the elegant colonnade to view window art. Visit the adjoining art museum at this Baroque treasure with paintings, sculptures and intricate mosaics.

An art museum and an array of statues are among the artistic treats that surround the opulent Santuario della Madonna dello Splendore. This Baroque sanctuary dates back to the 16th century, when it was built beside a water spring with supposed healing powers. Touch the water to receive the blessing of the Virgin Mary.

Arrive at the sanctuary and peer up at the intricate rose window in the center of the façade. The lower third of the front is an arcade. White columns frame a stone frontage topped by a colorful pediment, while a colonnade of tall, narrow arches wraps around the building’s base. Examine the stunning portrayals of biblical scenes on the arched windows within the arcade.

Greeting you in the square in front of the convent is a large bronze statue of St. Francis, with his arms in a spread-eagle pose. See other gems such as the Stations of the Cross and Madonna of Splendor.

Decorating the interior walls of the sanctuary is a series of large 20th-century paintings by Alfonso Tentarelli. Attend one of the Mass services that take place several times per day and admire the excellent acoustics.

Chat with worshippers and clergy about the sanctuary’s origin story, relating to a farmer who saw the Virgin Mary shrouded in light. The legend speaks of a miraculous water source that is still in use today, flowing into the mosaic basin of a water feature.

Venture next door for the archaeological, religious and artistic delights held by the Dello Splendore Museum. Its oldest item on display is the Madonna del Latte, a wooden sculpture from the 1200s. Study the collection of more than 130 pieces of local and international art.

The Santuario della Madonna dello Splendore stands beside its namesake museum, inland from the busy Giulianova shoreline. Stroll northwest from the central beach area for about 30 minutes to get here. Complete your trip by visiting the Porto di Giulianova and the Torre del Salinello, among other attractions.
