This was a terrible place to stay. On the plus side, it's close to the city plaza, which is nice. But for the negatives, our room reeked of cigarettes (they allow smoking in the front, which was a few feet from our door). The smell of sewage from the bathroom drains filled the room, and there's loud noise from the street all the time.

Superb Hostel in SJ's Chinatown

Could not have had a better experience at Hostel 1110. It was a bit of a walk to/from the Gran Terminal del Caribe, but we knew that when we booked our room (plus, SJ is super fun/easy to traverse on foot). The front desk staff is available 24/7 and all staff are *incredibly* friendly. Readily offered us the continued use of the common areas after our morning check-out, which is always a big plus for hostel stays. We stayed two nights on the tail-end of our trip and really enjoyed relaxing on the porch. Hostel itself was incredibly clean and well managed. Well kept kitchen, functioning appliances, the provided breakfast is HOMEMADE (eggs, fresh cut fruit, toast with spread), not just a selection of pastries/coffee. Beautiful wildlife murals on the walls, painted (or at least the touched up, as witnessed) by volunteer staff. We had a private room - it was very clean with rotating fan included. Privates are located across the street from the common areas and dorms - access via locked gate. Bathrooms functioned very well, one of the best showers we'd had during our two week trip in the country. Extremely fast WiFi. There is also a public desktop for guest use. Cold sodas/beers and other snacks were sold at the front desk - we didn't purchase any, but very nice to have on offer and added to the welcoming, well-catered vibe. Good location - far enough from the busy streets for it to be quiet, but right next to the Chinatown walking mall for quick daytime travel and exploring.

Very Disappointing stay

First got put into a room where the wifi couldn't reach us and it was super cramped. Thankfully they put us in another room after complaining. Mattress are super thin and pillow was horrendous. We had to go through another dorm to have a shower use the toilet and there was only one! Or have to use the stinky store room bathroom. Staff was ok and breakfast was average. Good wifi though if it reaches your room. Can easily walk to the centre by 10 minutes

Nothing like the pictures

I have stayed in many hostels in Costa Rica and this was by far the worst I had ever seen. Obviously, you go to hostels to save money but you also expect a certain amount of cleanliness and hospitality. This hostel was in a very desolate part of San José. I feel very safe in this city but this area felt shady. There was not a single other person staying there and the reception guy was not friendly at all. I was by alone when I arrived and I felt very uncomfortable. The room was not unbearable but it had no windows and the sheets had holes in them. I went back to the front desk and asked for my money back. The guy didn't put up a fight but I only got a little of my money back because I (stupidly) paid with a credit card. ALWAYS ask to see the room before you agree to pay for it. This is the lesson I learned from this place.

Odeur de moisi

Le lieu est agréable mais l'odeur de la chambre est étouffante. Humide et sans aération. Les draps n'étaient pas propres.

השהות הייתה נחמדה, החשר במצב בנוני. ביקשנו עזרה לגבי הנחיות לנסיעה למקומות מהאחראי בקבלה ורוב השאלות שלנו נשארו בסימן שאלה מכיוון שהוא לא ידע. חשוב שמארח בהוסטל ידע מידע חשוב לגבי נסיעות באותו יעד שנמצאים כדי לעזור למטיילים להמשך דרכם
