On D-Day, John M.Steele, one of the mortar platoon of the 505 PIR of the US 82nd Airborne had his chute snag on the church tower as he descended. Here he hung during the battle, watching helplessly as his colleagues fought below. This scene was famously reenacted in the film "The Longest Day", and a manequin now hangs from the church in Ste Mere Eglise depicting the event (do you see him?)

Interesting mannequins caught my eye. These troops sit in a military glider - apparently they often had very rough landings.
