This area boasts excellent winter sports facilities, with good hiking in summer and winter. It is home to one of Norway's largest remaining stave churches.
Ringebu might not look like much on the map, but a holiday in Ringebu offers magnificent inland nature and the chance to visit Kvitfjell alpinanlegg (Kvitfjell Alpine Facility). The area makes a great base for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter, or perhaps you would prefer horse riding in the mountains?
Ringebu is a village in Oppland. Ringebu, or Vålebrua as it is also known, is the largest village in the municipality and the administrative centre of the region. Ringebu is situated along the E6, which is the main road link between southern and northern Norway, making it a popular stop-off.
There are good reasons to stop here, most notably Ringebu stavkirke (Ringebu Stave Church), one of Norway’s largest stave churches which dates back to the early 1200s. You could also discover the Weidemannsamlingen (Weidemann Art Collection), which is on display at Ringebu prestegård (Ringebu Rectory) each summer. If you enjoy hiking in forests and the countryside, you should head up Muen, the highest peak in the municipality. Venabygdsfjellet also provides an excellent starting point for hikes.
Ringebu is home to several shops and eateries, and what better way to get into the holiday spirit than enjoying an ice cream in the sun? The surrounding areas also boast plenty of attractions, such as the open-air museum Maihaugen at Lillehammer, where you can see old houses and buildings from all of Gudbrandsdalen.
Ringebu is easily accessible by car as it is situated along the E6. It takes close to three hours to drive from Oslo and around five hours from Trondheim, both of which have international airports. It is also possible to travel by bus or train, but for ease of getting around, it’s a good idea to hire a car.
