Paul do Mar is an easy-going village, dramatically perched between the sea and rugged green cliffs. Despite its unassuming atmosphere, this village is one of the most important fishing centers in Madeira. Popular with surfers from around the world, the town is also home to a number of charming restaurants where you can enjoy fresh fish while discussing the latest wave conditions.
Take a walk along the town’s seafront promenade and follow the small stairway leading down to the beach. Find a spot in the sand to watch surfers riding powerful waves or go for a swim in the clear waters. Don’t leave without sampling some of the town’s outstanding seafood specialties, including lapas clams. Try a glass of Brisa, a popular brand of locally produced soda.
Follow the picturesque trail leading from Paul do Mar to Prazeres. This hike into the cliffs behind the town takes around 90 minutes to complete. At the top of the cliffs, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the sea and mountains.
Drive up the nearby hill to visit the village of Faja da Ovelha, which is set on a rock facing over Paul do Mar. According to local legend, Faja da Ovelha is protected by St. Amaro, who ensures the village does not topple off the cliff. Be sure to stop at the gorgeous viewpoint over Paul do Mar, located on the road between the two towns. You’ll find a restaurant here where you can sip a drink while admiring the scene below.
Don’t miss neighboring Jardim do Mar, another lovely seaside town surrounded by picturesque mountains. Like Paul do Mar, Jardim do Mar has gained international recognition for its surf breaks and has hosted several major surf competitions. Go for a stroll through the town’s narrow streets, people-watch in the charming square and visit one of the three beaches that stretch along its coastline.
Paul do Mar is located in the western part of Madeira. It is around a 45-minute drive from Funchal.
