A holiday in Oropesa is ideal for everyone who wants to discover the secrets and natural attractions of the province of Toledo.

Oropesa is a town in the province of Toledo, in Castile-La Mancha. The name literally means “weight of gold”, and there are many theories to its origin. The most popular one from the time of Muslim occupation is when a maid was taken captive, to rescue her, the Templars had to pay her weight in gold. If you look at the shield of the town, you can see a woman holding a scales.

History and local legends are a mainstay of ourcheap trips to Oropesa. So, let’s get to it and visit the castle of Oropesa, built by the Arabs back in the 12th century on the site of a former Roman building. The place is very well preserved and, if you're looking for a moment of tranquillity, you won't want to leave it off your itinerary.

There are plenty of religious sights to be seen too: there’s the chapel of San Bernardo, considered by many to be the precursor of Spanish Baroque art, and the convent of the Misericordia, founded in 1618 to meet the educational needs of the town's female population. You won't want to miss the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, either.

If you want to get in touch with nature with our package deals to Oropesa, be sure to visit the El Corazón del Águila Visitors’ Centre, located in a former pilgrim’s hospital from the 15th century. There you’ll learn all about the majestic eagles of the region, and you’ll understand the problems faced as part of their conservation. Local experts carry out guided tours so you can really get to know the surroundings.

You can also go on an excursion at your own pace along the groves of the River Guadyerbas and the sands of the Velada wasteland. This protected natural area spans some 4,100 acres, making it the largest in Toledo. Stroll at your leisure through this haven of peace and tranquillity, and enjoy a picnic with your loved ones as you rest both body and mind.

You can take a train to get to the town from Madrid. Check our offers of flight and hotel in Oropesa and experience all this and much more.
