Orange Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Orange which includes a statue or sculpture and heritage elements
Exuding Provençal charm, this low-key town acts as a good base from which to explore the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region.

Orange is a small and quiet town, best known for its semicircular Roman theatre, one of the world’s best-preserved examples of Roman architecture. Find another Roman monument and a fascinating museum in this town, perfect for discovering the compelling Roman history and enviable wine culture of this region.

The settlement of Orange was originally founded in 35 B.C., although it wasn’t bestowed with its name until the Middle Ages, when it was placed under the dominion of the House of Orange-Nassau.

Admire the astonishing Roman Theatre of Orange, a UNESCO-listed monument that is among the most complete examples of Roman architecture in the world. If you visit during summer, secure tickets for the prestigious Les Chorégies d’Orange festival. During the festival, a series of high-quality productions are staged in the Roman theatre.

From the front of the theatre, take a short walk to the Museum of Art and History. This impressive museum exhibits artifacts ranging from Roman relics to 20th-century paintings from artists including Albert de Belleroche and Frank Brangwyn.

North of the theatre, find the town’s other major Roman vestige: the Arc de Triomphe. Following a 2009 restoration project, this impressive arch has been brought back to its former glory. Inspect the intricate carvings commemorating Rome, now in impeccable condition.

Stroll around the town and see other fascinating ecclesial buildings, including the Gothic façade of Saint Florent Church, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Nazareth and the picturesque Protestant Temple. Visit Harmas de Fabre, the former home of the famous entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre. Across the road, the Naturoptère museum hosts nature and science exhibitions honouring the legacy of Fabre.

Take a daytrip south of Orange to visit wineries in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, which produces powerful and complex red wines.

Orange is located north of Avignon. Regional trains and buses connect the two towns. Driving from Avignon will take about 30 minutes. The town provides a satisfying mix of ancient history, modern culture and viticulture.

Small town with plenty of restaurants, shops and history. One thing though, if you arrive by train, you will not find a taxi unless you pre-book it.

Apart from the amphitheatre, there isnt a great deal to do in Orange. Note that the amphitheatre is currently under restauration and the main front wall facing the seating area is fully scaffolded.
