Obertauern Travel Guide

This lively resort is best known for its long ski season, with ideal snow conditions typically available from November to May each year. 

Set on the edge of the tree line with the peaks of the Tauern range surrounding it, Obertauern is sometimes described as “Austria’s snow bowl.” With the highest slopes at over 8,200 feet (2,500 metres), the resort’s ski conditions are some of the most reliable in the Alps. Seize the opportunity to try floodlit skiing after dark and then enjoy the resort’s dynamic nightlife.

Obertauern’s lifts and runs are arranged like the spokes of a wheel, which means you can ski in any direction and take the lift back at the end of the day to easily return to your starting point. In this popular purpose-built resort, it’s possible to ski to and from the doors of most hotels. Look for photos in many accommodation of the Beatles enjoying these intriguing slopes during the filming of their movie, Help! 

Try Gamsleiten No. 2, one of Europe’s steepest mogul slopes, if you’re an experienced skier. The resort also features more than 38 miles (61 kilometres) of beginner trails and 22 miles (35 kilometres) of slopes geared toward intermediate skiers. Head to Longplay Snowboard Park to take on over 15 rails, boxes and jumps.

The resort also has many excellent cross-country skiing runs, including the 14-mile (23-kilometre) Twenger Au run, the region’s longest run. Don’t miss nighttime skiing, which takes place at the Edelweissbahn lift twice a week. Floodlights illuminate the 1-mile (1.5 kilometre) run for an enchanting ski experience. 

For a change of pace, check out Sports Centre Obertauern, a multipurpose mountainside recreation facility at 5,740 feet (1,750 metres). Play tennis, go bowling or have a workout at the fitness centre. The facility also offers massage services and has a restaurant.

Obertauern is located in west central Austria, 60 miles (100 kilometres) southeast of Salzburg. To get here, drive or take the train from Salzburg or Innsbruck to Radstadt and then take a taxi or one of the buses departing regularly for Obertauern.
