Onceknown mostly for its lakes and cattle trading, the town of Mullingarin CountyWestmeath has since become much more than a mere market town. Whileits lakes are still an attraction, Mullingar isnow an exuberant town with a great food scene, an exciting nightlife and sportingactivities catering to every taste.

Thetown is abuzz with things to keep visitors entertained. Head out shopping, tothe dog racing, or just enjoy one of Mullingar’srenowned annual festivals. Also located in some of Ireland’s most distinctivelandscape, you can enjoy the best of both worlds here by getting lost in natureif you need some solitude.

Lakesin Mullingar

Thenumber and quality of the lakes in County Westmeathis exceptional. Keen anglers can head out trout fishing on LoughEnnell and swimmers can take a summer dip in the refreshingwaters of Lough Lene. LoughDerravaragh is the largest lake in the area and a popular spot forsailing and sub-aqua sports. With every lake here offering something unique andall of them promising stunning country views, they’re definitely worth a visit.

Mullingar’sBelvedere House

Builtas an 18th century hunting lodge, there is some impressivearchitecture to see at Belvedere Country House.The original building is spliced with a superb 19th century terrace,fabulous Rococo ceilings and peaceful gardens that are particularly pleasant insummer. The atmospheric setting means Belvedere House is a wonderful venue for outdoortheatre, and it has a regular and eclectic schedule of exciting weekend musicfestivals, too.
