Moraira, a town in Teulada, 80 kilometres from Alicante, is the ideal destination to spend a few days getting away from it all. The church of Santa Catalina is a must-see site on your cheap trip to Moraira. This temple, built during the 16th century, also acted as a fortress to protect the inhabitants from attacks by pirates. From the 18th century onwards, a series of extensions and renovations were carried out, and as a result, only part of the wall remains in the back area of the church.
See how, in the 16th century, coastal towns were well aware of the threat posed by pirates. Another example of this is the Torre del Cabo de Oro, a defensive watchtower in the Renaissance style. It’s quite the sight!
Close by you’ll find the Les Rates Penades Cave, which was created by the tides eroding away the rocks. The name means “the bat cave” in Catalan, as will become clear when you enter. The cave is also a Bronze Age archaeological site from the Iberian period. If you want to see it, be ready to don your swimsuit and get out the inflatable boat, because it can only be accessed by sea.
The Castle of Moraira also served a defensive purpose and helped with surveillance. Completed in 1742, its thick walls and ox-hoof floor plan make it unmistakable. The fort presides over the L'Ampolla beach, the largest in Moraira and famous for the quality of its sands. What could be nicer than a dip in the Mediterranean waters?
