Watch a game of ice hockey, go cross-country skiing and purchase a Dala Horse souvenir in this old-fashioned town adorning the shores of a pair of lakes.

Located between two large and scenic lakes, Mora is an ideal base for exploration of some of Sweden’s most spectacular scenery. It has a quaint town center filled with museums and historic structures. To remember your trip, pick up a traditional Dala Horse, a souvenir that is considered particularly Swedish.

Walk west for a few minutes from the Mora train station to reach the town’s center, where you’ll find the Zorngården. Formerly inhabited by famous Swedish painter Anders Zorn, the gallery holds many of his iconic paintings of rural and traditional Sweden. Admire the quaint architecture of the nearby Church of Mora.

Join a guided tour of the Vasaloppet Museum to learn about the history of its cross-country skiing race. The site traces the competition back to its origins in 1922. Visit the iconic finishing line at the beginning of March to see the winning skiers.

Ice hockey is also a key part of the culture here. Watch a game at the Smidjegrav Arena during the season, which runs from September to March.

Stroll along the shores of Orsa Lake to the north or Siljan Lake on the southern boundary of the town. You can also travel southwest to serene and picturesque Kattbo Lake. Continue exploring the region’s impressive scenery in the Orsa Gronklitt Bear Park. Spot Kodiak bears and join other skiers on the 22 runs of the ski complex.

The small town sits in the Dalarna province near the center of Sweden. Drive northwest or take a train from Stockholm to get here in about 4 hours. You can also fly to Mora-Siljan Airport, a little south of the town. See some of the other towns in the region, including Borlänge and Falun.

Winter sports and lake activities are what make the traditional town of Mora special.
