Ride a cable car, stroll through parkland and get an elevated view of the city when you visit this lookout point.
For panoramic views over La Paz, head up to the Mirador Laikakota, a lookout point and park on top of a long, narrow hill. From here, there is also an excellent view of Illimani, a snow-covered mountain that overlooks the city.
The mirador is part of the Parque Mirador Laikakota, the oldest park in the city. To get to it, ride the cable car from the center of the city or walk along the series of boardwalks.
After admiring the views of the downtown areas, other neighborhoods and the mountainous backdrop, explore the rest of the park. It encompasses numerous rides and play equipment for children. Challenge friends and family with a game of chess on the giant chessboard and relax in the café.
Go to the neighboring Parque Urbano Central for more outdoor recreation. Jog or walk along its paths and cycle on the designated bike lanes. Amble down the Via Balcón, an elevated walkway, play soccer in the sports fields and watch a concert at the Teatro al Aire de La Paz Jaime Laredo, an open-air theater. If you need refreshments, purchase snacks and drinks from street vendors that congregate in the park.
Head to the Memorial Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz, dedicated to a hero of the country's pro-democracy struggles of the 1970s. He was abducted and killed in 1980. See if there are any art exhibitions at the Cupula de Adobe, a cultural center. Take the funicular up to the children's museum, known as Pipiripi, which features a variety of games and equipment for young visitors to play with.
Located in the center of the city, Mirador Laikakota is easily reached by public transportation. Alternatively, ride the cable car from the city center or from within the Parque Mirador Laikakota, where the cost is cheaper. The park is open daily from morning until early evening and charges an admission fee, although children get in for free.
