About Macau

Macau is a major city located across from the Pearl River delta in southern China. Until recently, the region was an overseas territory of Portugal. Nowadays, it is part of the People’s Republic of China, but it still withholds much of its Portuguese influence. Macau is most famous for its gaming facilities, which brings in more than seven times the revenue of Las Vegas.

Don’t Miss

Macau’s history is extremely rich and even today, much of it can be seen through the city’s UNESCO Heritage-listed sites. The Macau Heritage Walk takes tourists through the European-drenched streets of the old town to sites like Lilau Square, St. Lawrence Church, the ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Don Pedro V Theatre. This is an ideal way to see the impressive history of the city in just a few hours.

Macau Tower is a modern addition to this historic city. It is also one of the most visited spots in the region. This sky-scraping tower is the perfect spot to take in views of Macau Peninsula and nearby Taipa island. The world-famous adventure company, A.J. Hackett, offers several exhilarating facilities at the top of the tower for those visitors looking to get the blood pumping.

Restaurants and bars

The food in Macau is among China’s most diverse. There are various Chinese restaurants located across the city along with plenty of Portuguese-inspired venues too. Everything from cheap street vendors to high-end hotel restaurants operate in Macau. Alcoholic drinks are served in the casinos and most restaurants. There are a few bars and clubs along Fisherman’s Wharf and Avenue Dur Sun Yat-Sen.

Shopping

The best places for shopping in Macau are the small shops and market places operating around the city. The Red Market is the best place to find local and foreign foods of all kinds, not to mention various souvenir items and every day merchandise. The Three Lamps is a fascinating area that boasts plenty of narrow alleyways and streets lined with stores selling a range of goods from clothing to handicrafts.
