Storm on the horizon at Maplethorpe
The church was made redundant in 1971 and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Extensive repairs and renewals have been carried out in recent years. The church dates from the 12th century onwards, with some Norman work on the north side. The rest of the church dates from around 1380 to 1400. There is extensive brick patching from the 17th century. The church was restored the in 1866, the chancel and tower somewhat later. It consists of a western tower, nave with north and south aisles and clerestory, chancel, and south porch. Outside, the church is battlemented with pinnacles and gargoyles, with much evidence of the brick patching. Inside, the nave has north and south arcades of five bays with octagonal piers. The stone used is both dark and pale coloured which gives a pleasing chequered effect. The nave roof was restored in the 19th century. Both aisles have carved wooden parclose screens from around 1535 with faces and a coat of arms of the Angevine family. The Rood screen has remains of coloured paint on it. At the east end of the north aisle there is a mediaeval altar stone, however there is a large crack running through the floor and wall. The south Chapel has an ornate carved stone reredos. There is also a brass to Robert Hayton, died 1424, and a matrix for another brass, the figures are missing. The chancel has a marble altar table, sedilia and piscina. There is also a monument to Charles Bertie, died 1727.

Shipwreck at Sutton on Sea This wreck, which is approximately 50 yards offshore, periodically makes an appearance at low tide. There is another wreck about 200 yards further along the shore towards Sandilands but little of it can be seen at present.

Grade I listed The church dates from the 13th century onwards and was restored in the late 19th and early 20th century. There is a fourth stage western tower, nave with clerestory and aisles, chancel, and south porch. The tower dates from the 13th century and has a battlemented parapet. The height of the tower was increased when the rest of the church is enlarged in the 14th century. The tower was restored in 1882. The chancel arch dates from the 13th century and has two corbel heads. The south aisle dates from the 15th century and is the exterior has gargoyles. The south porch is also from that date. The nave arcades are of five bays with octagonal piers and dates from the 14th century. The chancel is of brick from 1781. The nave and chancel roofs are from the late 19th century with painted panels. There is a 15th century octagonal font which is quite unique, although there is a similar one at Covenham Saint Bartholomew (it has now been removed to Manchester) The elaborate carvings depict Virgin Mary and Jesus, Saints Simon and Jude, Saint James the less and Saint Bartholomew and more. There are figures around the stem depicting various Saints, and at the base of the symbols of the four evangelists, a lion, Eagle, Ox and Angel. There are two incised slabs from the late 15th century. The church was restored in 1869, at a cost of £1000. The church has an old Forster and Andrews barrel organ from 1851, and a one manual Forster and Andrews organ still in use.
