This ancient and desolate ruined city provides a fascinating insight into the life of the Harappan culture and the Indus Valley Civilization.
Visit the millennia-old ruins of Lothal to discover captivating stories of the Indus Valley Civilization. Learn about the lifestyle, trading customs and craftsmanship of the Harappan people, who were an important part of the civilization. Lothal, which means Mound of the Dead in Gujariti language, dates back to around 2,400 B.C. Archaeologists excavated the area between 1955 and 1960. Today you can visit a museum of archaeological findings and walk amid the remains of a once prosperous trading city.
Get an introduction to the history of the city at the museum. Find out how a sleepy village turned into a flourishing trade centre which traded beads, gemstones and luxury ornaments with Africa and West Asia. An artist’s impression shows how the city looked during its heyday. Spot displays of copper tools, earthenware and figurines, jewellery and semi-precious stones. Marvel at the necklaces made of beads so small you’ll need a magnifying glass to see them.
The excavated area exposes an outline of the ancient city and traces of significant landmarks. As you stroll between the exhibits, imagine a time when skilled craftsmen and merchants conducted trade negotiations. Check out the dockyard, which was once connected to the Sabarmati River, and a warehouse that could accommodate multiple cargo ships.
Go to the acropolis and lower town area, which served as the city’s commercial heart. See the remnants of baths, courtyards, wells and workshops. Check out the former bread factory, brick houses and a marketplace.
Located in the village of Saragwala, the city is about a 1.5-hour drive south from Ahmedabad. The most convenient way to get here is via taxi or a private driver. You can also catch a train from Ahmedabad to nearby Lothal-Burkhi Railway Station and then take a taxi.
Lothal is open from Saturday to Thursday and there is an admission fee. Signs in English give information about the various exhibits. A large part of the attraction is outdoors so bring water and avoid visiting at midday, when the sun can be particularly hot.
