The city flourished in the 12th century and grew into an important university city after the arrival of the Catholic University Leuven in 1425. The city was badly damaged in the First and Second World Wars. Part of the historic centre was destroyed and the town hall badly damaged. The two wars were followed by several decades of reconstruction. Today Leuven is a convivial, atmospheric city.
The Library of Leuven University, built in Flemish Renaissance style, is well worth visiting. Among other things, the impressive building has a tower that is 87 metres high. Climb the 289 steps for a spectacular view of the city and its surroundings. Once you're back down, a 5-minute walk will take you to one of the most popular shopping streets, Bondgenotelaan. M-Museum, where you can admire modern and ancient art is also nearby. Just outside the old city centre you will find Brouwerij Artois which offers a number of different tours. Learn how beer is brewed and even enjoy one after the tour. And if you like the taste, go to the old market for a fun evening out.
The centre of Leuven is small making it easy to get around on foot. Stroll through the charming streets and relax at one of the sidewalk cafés in the summer. If you would like to explore the city like the local students do, hire a couple of bicycles! Buses are also a great way of discovering some of the more remote corners of the city. Follow the P-route to park your car in one of the city's parking garages.
Leuven is east of Brussels in the heart of Belgium. You can reach it by car or by train via Antwerp or Brussels. Parking in one of the garages or on the street is not free of charge. Bear in mind that part of the old city centre has been pedestrianised.
