Knight's Square

The former political center of medieval Pisa is lined with many of the city’s most significant buildings. A prestigious university creates a lively atmosphere.

As the centerpiece of Pisa’s Santa Maria historical quarter, Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knight’s Square) is a destination for anyone fascinated by the city’s rich and engaging history. The square’s Renaissance style, along with the facades of the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, the Palazzo della Carovona and the Palace of the Clock, make the Knight’s Square one of the most picturesque destinations in the city.

For centuries the spacious Piazza dei Cavalieri was the political hub of Pisa. Admire the architecture of Giorgio Vasari, the famous Italian architect responsible for redesigning the square during the 16th century. Stroll across the vast open space and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Visit the stunning Church of Santo Stefano, one of the most recognizable buildings on the square. The marble and sandstone structure is known for its intricately painted wooden ceiling and its collection of trophy banners captured from Saracen pirates. Pass by the dominating Palazzo della Carovona to see where the knights of Pisa once resided. Its facade features a series of sculptures and carved statues depicting notable Pisans and the city’s coat of arms. Don’t miss the Palace of the Clock, a monumental campanile built to join two of the city’s ancient towers.

During the week, students from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, one of the city’s most prestigious universities, can be seen discussing philosophy or politics on the steps of the school. Follow the locals to a café in one of the seven streets that lead from the square to find where the best coffee is served.

Piazza dei Cavalieri is located in central Pisa and if you arrive on foot you can get there by walking along some of the city’s most scenic streets. Buses service the area frequently. Those arriving by car may struggle to find parking, but limited metered street parking is available just outside the historic centre.

If only there was more in the way of public seating so that one could sit and enjoy a beautiful Piazza.
