Karup has wonderful scenery and a great place to learn about the Danish air force.
There are plenty of fantastic things to do all day long along the languid River Karup, if you’re visiting Karup for a long time or a weekend trip. If you’re an aeroplane enthusiast, you can watch planes taking off and landing at Karup Airport and also learn more about Denmark’s military planes at the Flyvestation Karup Museum.
Karup is located at the heart of Mid-Jutland, about 15miles south of Viborg and 15 miles north of Herning. The town dates back to 1906 when the town had just a handful of houses – ironically making it one of the larger villages in the area. Until 1977, it was a major crossing station on the railway line between Herning and Viborg.
Nowadays, Karup is best known for its combined airport and military airbase, Flyvestation Karup, the biggest in Northern Europe, built by the Germans during WWII for air raids on England. The airbase also has its own museum with an amazing collection of old, restored planes and other military objects.
Karup is a popular destination for fly fishing fans, as the river is rich in sea trout. The river is also popular for boating, where you can rent a canoe and paddle all the way to Skive, about 21 miles to the north. In 1964, a 500-ha area along the river was turned into a nature reserve, which now has a unique panorama of flora and fauna for river travellers.
Thanks to its favourable location between several large towns, a holiday in Karup can be easily combined with a visit to such local attractions as Viborg Cathedral or a concert at Jyske Bank BOXEN in Herning. Getting to Karup is easy by car or bus, and if coming from Copenhagen, you can fly direct to Karup Airport.
Once there, you can enjoy the wonderful local scenery on the river, or take it all in on land while playing a round of golf at Karup Å Golfklub.
