A beautiful location by Lake Vanern and a spectacular art and culture scene make Karlstad a wonderful place to discover.

About 300 km west of Stockholm, and 250 km north east of Gothenburg, you will find cultural Karlstad. This charming city by Lake Vanern offers visitors ample opportunities for cultural experiences and entertainment, with an opera house, several theatres and plenty of museums.

Karlstad has been recognised as a historically important stronghold since the Vikings reigned over Sweden’s towns and forests, and in 1584 it received its city status as well as its current name, derived from the former King Charles IX of Sweden. Today, 60,000 people call Karlstad home, and throughout the years, many artists and writers have immortalised their love for the city through their art.

A weekend in Karlstad will give you a perfect introduction to the city. One of the most popular attractions to visit in the area is the Alster manor house and surroundings. The beautiful estate was built in the 18th century and is a lovely place to take in the serene environment. Visitors can relax and enjoy a mean at the restaurant and café, whilst admiring the picturesque views of Lake Vanern before venturing to the small beach or exploring the hiking trails.

Head back to the city centre to shop for souvenirs and visit fascinating museums. At Varmlands Museum you can find out more about the art, culture and history of the area. In Karlstad you will also find the impressive Brigade Museum. This interactive museum covers Sweden’s military history as well as the main events of the cold war. The museum also has a shop and a café, where you can rest with a cup of coffee and pick up some retro inspired trinkets and souvenirs.

If you’re looking for things to do with kids in Karlstad, you should head towards Sundstabadet. This large swimming centre has an exciting water park, where younger visitors can enjoy splashing fun. If you’re looking for relaxation you will also find a hamam, a sauna and a Jacuzzi.

Karlstad is easily accessible by car or train from both Stockholm and Gothenburg. There are also regular flights that will take you from Stockholm Arlanda to Karlstad Airport.
