The museum was quite interesting (the James gang, indeed!) and the volunteers friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the history of the place, and the room was quite comfortable.

This property was listed as a”bed and breakfast,” but when i checked in i learned that they had discontinued serving breakfast when Co-vid became a concern. I was disappointed, as i always look forward to the breakfasts served in B&Bs. On the brighter side, my room was very cozy and comfortable and the hosts were helpful and enthusiastic about the historic property. However, I could have appreciated a bit less of the upstairs and down historical tour. Best part was that it was pet friendly and had NO fee or deposit for my pet!

BE CAREFUL
First off, this is not a hotel, motel or inn. It’s a 2 story home built in 1850 that has many problems that need fixed. No AC air heater. They use portable fans & heaters but if you turn them on, you will blow a fuse and have to adjust breaker outside. Internet stopped working halfway through our stay. Cash only, they will not accept debit/credit card. Owner called me at 7 am asking when I was checking out day of check out while I was sleeping. He said they had a wedding that day and needed to know what time I was leaving. I reminded him check out was 11 am. Very narrow staircase, 2 bedrooms only upstairs. Home feels like someone hoarded items ranging from 1900’s - mid 1990’s. There’s stuff EVERYWHERE. Don’t book if you have kids.

We are volunteers and work hard to maintain the historic Patterson Home which houses the historical museum and the inn . The inn helps to keep the museum open for the community and the displays help to preserve our local history. Although you chose not to take the historical tour of the museum, your mother did take the tour upon her arrival and enjoyed the history. She also seemed to like Elizabeth's Room where she stayed for the two night reservation. We do have central air conditioning and heating at the Smithville Historical Museum and Inn. The thermostat is located in the upstairs hallway for guests to adjust, if needed. The portable heaters are just included in the rooms as a convenience to our guests in case they wish to have additional heat. Since the Smithville Historical Museum and Inn is not for profit, we only accept checks or cash as the method of payment. We inform our guests when we receive their reservation and we have never received any complaints. We had called you shortly before 8:00 am on your check out date since we thought that you needed to take your mother to the airport. Although a wedding party had reserved both rooms and was arriving in the early afternoon, it did not affect your check out. We are very family oriented and welcome families with their children. Over the years, we have had many families stay at the inn and they have enjoyed their visit to the museum and their stay at the inn very much. We are also pet friendly and allowed for your two dogs to stay with you at no additional cost. We hope that you and your mother visit us again in the future.

Inn/museum in an old house. We grew up in an old houses so not a big deal for us. We checked in went to a bunch of wineries went back to the inn slept and left so didn’t stay long. It’s not for everyone

Pretty dirty. We couldn't believe the hair (human we assume) on shower walls. Mold growing on wall and pictures. (We took photos.) yard is overgrown, unmowed. There's a creepy white van in the grass. It's a very well-loved and clearly treasured property. It has family history to the owner which is very sweet.

It was very nice, very quaint! Enjoyed looking @ the many antiques. Only suggestion I would have is to b sure advertise that it is cash only! Luckily I had just enough cash on me cause I'm a card person. My travel agent was not aware either.

This Inn is part of a museum and only for those who are interested in the history of Smithville and it’s people. This is our second time there and we loved it because of its links from pre-civil war and westward US expansion. It’s hard to categorize the property against modern facilities and standards because of its age. Instead, think of it as a stay back in time, but does have a few modern conveniences.

Smithville's best!
Frank Justus, the caretaker of this property and the curator of the Historical Museum, as well as his wife, Maria, run a beautiful and unique lodging experience. I chose this Inn because of its proximity to the Kansas City airport, and Frank's gracious offer to pick up or take his quests to the airport. He includes a fascinating walk-through the museum, and he is extremely knowledgeable both about the property itself, but also the town of Smithville. The Museum and Inn are perfectly situated near the city square and a number of delicious dining choices. The room (Cathleen's they call it) was spacious, carefully decorated, and includes an even more spacious bathroom, with a great clawfoot tub (alas, not particularly great for showering as the protective plastic curtain liners stick to you in the shower from all directions), and both are thoughtfully appointed. I had a good quiet night, and never heard the other guests in the other bedroom, and Mr. Justus gives the guests the run of the house, including an expansive back patio for morning coffee. Bummer that this site doesn't seem to allow me to upload pictures from my Google Photos folder.

The museum is really neat, definitely something i recommend to history buffs as Frank is very knowledgable and passionate about the history of the place. I booked the room based off of the uniqueness of the place as well as the advertisement of a private balcony, which was taped off and inaccessible. The lack of access to the balcony was upsetting, and i would remove that from the ad if it isnt accessible, but i would still recommend the property. Maybe not with kids though, theres a lot of fragile stuff around.

Quaint and old fashioned. No tv in room. No wifi. Downtown a short walk but not much there. 2 restaurants. 1 coffee shop. Frank was informative, friendly, and made check in - check out so easy. I am happy i chose this place to stay 2 nights.

It is in a museum and an older building. It was clean and comfortable. There are no amenities, but the small town is within waking distance with a couple of restaurants and shops.

A tour of the museum came with the stay. We got a little history of the Smithville area and the Inn. The kitchen was well-supplied with ware, along with having a full size refrigerator and freezer. We even did a load of laundry with the washer and dryer. You wouldn't label this as up-to-date, but it had all the amenities we needed.

The museum setting is quite unique. The staff was very pleasant and the added tour of the museum was a bonus. Room was comfy and the local restaurant was tasty. Would have been helpful to know ahead of time that payment had to be made in cash, no credit cards accepted. Overall an unforgetable but pleasant experience.

Very neat older home from the early 1900's with a two room museum. Frank, the caretaker, knows a lot about the area and really gave us a neat short tour of the museum. The WiFi is limited and our room didn't have a TV, but it was a great experience at an older Inn. Quiet and safe and convenient.

Like walking back in time
Clean, quiet and homey. I felt like I was staying at my Grandma's house, which was a plus! My grandmother was a person who could make anyone feel loved and cared for. I could slow down and really rest, which I needed tremendously.

The Inn is a nice place to stay. Frank, the priprietor keeps it orderly and is more than eager to give a tour of the property. He is well versed in the sites history and is pleasant company.

A unique blend of early American Colonial and small town is my best way of describing this absolutely beautiful space. If you like to turn back time, while still enjoying modern convinces, this is the place for you. As advertised, Frank the host, will meet you with tons of historical information about the town he loves, Smithville, Missouri. I stay a week and I will come back for another week in December. Truly a bargain for your money. Safe, quiet, comfortable, and very affordable… 😉

What a great place! The Inn is actually part of the Museum. We were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable curator/operator. Rooms were comfortable and clean. A definite stop on your travels.
