Travelers come from all over the world to see this small town’s unique hotel made of ice.

Known locally as “Jukkas,” Jukkasjärvi is a tiny town of around 600 permanent residents. The legendary Icehotel dominates the entrance to this unassuming town. Spend a night at the Icehotel and stick around to discover Jukkasjärvi’s other charms.

Jukkasjärvi’s iconic Icehotel is the main draw for many visitors. The world’s first hotel made of ice, the building is reconstructed each year after melting away into the adjacent Torneälven River every summer. Covering nearly 54,000 square feet (5,000 square meters), the hotel is comprised of a collection of igloos that house guest rooms, restaurants and a chapel where weddings often take place. Sleep on an ice block covered with reindeer hides in special high-tech sleeping bags. Relax in the sauna or sip cocktails in glasses made of ice at the hotel’s Icebar.

Stroll down the main street of Jukkasjärvi, Marknadsvägen, and admire the peaceful, snow-covered huts lining the road. At the end of the street, look for the red Jukkasjärvi Kyrka (Jukkasjärvi Church). Dating back to the early 17th century, this church is among the oldest in Swedish Lapland. The altarpiece is an interesting work of modern art by Bror Hjorth, depicting heroes from Lapland’s history. Look for the church’s organ, which is made of birch and reindeer horn. Notice a shaman’s drum featuring the Sami sun symbol and a Christian cross hanging above the organ.

Gain insight into traditional Sami life at the Nutti Sámi Siida reindeer yard. Learn about reindeer herding, try reindeer meat at the camp’s café and browse the reindeer-based products on display at its shop.

In winter, go snowmobiling or ride on a horse-drawn sleigh. In summer, enjoy hiking by the light of the midnight sun. Make a daytrip to the fascinating Esrange Space Center, which is located around 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Jukkasjärvi, to learn about space travel and research.

Jukkasjärvi is located 11 miles (17 kilometers) east of Kiruna, from where it’s accessible by bus. The closest airport is also located in Kiruna.

Visit this enchanting Swedish town and its legendary hotel.

"No one there to check us in or out. Cabin had essentials but needs updating. Property grounds need tidying. Not very welcoming. Fine for an overnight stop."
