Take a well-earned break from the chaos of Orlando’s thriving theme parks and come to relax in this beautiful tropical paradise, situated on the shores of the stunning Lake Rowena. Stretching over 20-hectares, the Harry P Leu Gardens display a diverse range of sub-tropical and tropical species, including roses, cacti and special herbs. Well worth a visit after a busy day touring Orlando’s downtown entertainment.
Constructed in 1888, the Leu House Museum is one of the most popular attractions in the gardens. The house’s previous owners, Harry P. Leu and his wife Mary Jane, donated the outer grounds to the City of Orlando in 1961, ever since, this beautiful 19th century structure has been one of the region’s greatest treasures. Take a guided tour through the house and witness the spectacular history that has been so carefully preserved. Visitors are advised make a reservation beforehand.
The gardens themselves boast an impressive 215 different roses and 50 varieties of azaleas all native to Central Florida. Numbering among the gardens extensive botanical collection include a fine ginger plant collection, ferns, herbs, a butterfly garden, orchids, and a tropical steam garden. This spectacular array of native horticulture is best viewed during the cooler months when in full bloom.
Take some time out of your busy schedule to stroll through the gardens and savour the shade of the ancient elm and oak trees that line the stoned pathways. Be sure to check out the garden’s master piece, the floral clock which changes its face according to the seasons.
Open every day (except Christmas day), if you visit on the first Monday of the month you will receive free daytime admission. Visitors should reserve least two hours of their time to explore the garden in full. If biting insects tend to like you, it’s best to take a repellent with you just in case.
