Hafjell is located right by Lillehammer and was opened as a ski resort as part of the 1994 Winter Olympics. The area is well-suited for active families and nature lovers.
The ski season in Hafjell Ski Resort (Hafjell alpinsenter) begins at the end of November, and night skiing is possible from New Year’s Day onwards. Ski equipment is available for rental, so you do not need to bring your own on your weekend trip to Hafjell. The area offers accommodation of various types – cabins, apartments and hotels – and there are also lots of different places to eat, be it a cooked meal or your packed lunch. The resort has many activities for children, such as a ski school and various clubs.
A short drive away, you will find Hunderfossen Family Park (Hunderfossen familiepark), which for several decades has brought joy to young and old with its fabulous attractions. You will get to go on the Il Tempo Gigante rollercoaster and meet the famous Hunderfoss troll. The park now also has a winter park, which is popular amongst young families in the ski area.
Lilleputthammer Family Park (Lilleputthammer familiepark) is nearby, and is designed for younger children, with its miniature houses, attractions, entertainment shows and circus. The Lekeland Hafjell indoor playpark is also very close by, and in addition to being a great place to play, it offers birthday parties with various themes.
The Norwegian Transport Museum (Norsk vegmuseum) is located in Hunderfossen too, and has a large outdoor area and many indoor exhibitions. Entrance is free, and the museum is especially popular with those interested in engines and machinery, but it also has several restaurants and shops. During your stay in Hafjell, you can also book a bobsleigh ride at the nearby Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, so that you can fly down the same course as the 1994 Olympians!
Hafjell Golf is situated just north of the ski resort. This 9-hole golf course features beautiful nature and breath-taking views. Not far away is Hafjell Bike Park, surrounded by equally stunning nature, with many trails of various difficulty grades. You can rent bikes and equipment here too. In Øyer, cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find over 370 miles of trails. You can actually ski all the way to the Sjusjøen alpine ski resort.
You can get to Hafjell by taking a train to Lillehammer and then a bus from there. Alternatively the resort is located 2.5 hours’ drive north from Oslo and 4.5 hours’ drive south from Trondheim with flights available from the UK to both cities.
